Everyone wants to lose unwanted flab. This is especially true because most of us have been stuck at desk job for the better part of our lives. The fact is that working a desk job is pretty conducive to accumulating fat and reduction of muscle building. You need to keep yourself active if you want to get that body you’ve always wanted.
This is great and all, but why aren’t more people at the gym getting in the best shape of their lives?
Because they lack the single most valuable ingredient in modern life – time!
Getting enough hours in a day to get done with work and then the chores at home can leave people exhausted. This coupled with the fact that you need to put aside time for exercise is a total deal breaker for a lot of people.
Most cardio exercises take a lot of time to activate your body and drawn the benefits of a good workout.
However, there is a piece of fitness equipment that you should consider for your home fitness needs. It’s called a TreadClimber. It combines the workouts of a treadmill, elliptical, and stairclimber to give you peak cardio workout performance.
Let’s get to know this machine and what it can do for your fitness levels.
TreadClimber – What Is It?
The TreadClimber is an innovation created by the people at BowFlex. The TreadClimber is one of the premier cardio machines out there and this is for good reason. It combines the functions of a treadmill, elliptical and stairclimber. It is found to burn 3.5 times the number of calories compared to similar cardio machines out there. This is a completely new take on cardiovascular exercises increasing your throughput and breaking down fat a lot easier than other cardio machines.
How are Treadclimbers different to other cardio machines?
While other cardio machines achieve 70% of your weight loss goal you have to keep in mind that they can take time to show results. This is because though they are effective, they not very intensive and are tiring to boot. This means you’ll spend a lot of time on it but don’t have enough to show for it.
This is where the TreadClimber shines through – it combines the effectiveness of the treadmill along with the intensiveness of the stair climber. Another important factor on this machine is that you don’t have to run on this machine rather just walk. This further reduces the impact your knees must go through when you’re on a TreadClimber.
Basically, what you’re doing with this is walking uphill and you’ve to put in a lot of effort to work on it unlike just walking. The advantage of this is that it is a controlled movement and does not stress your joints like most cardio machines do.
While it is true that the TreadClimber is a combination of several other cardio machines, it is also better than the sum of its parts – meaning that it gives you a workout better than the rest of them combined.
Breakdown Of Action – TreadClimber
Let’s take a look at how exactly a TreadClimber works your body. An important difference between the treadmill and a TreadClimber is that the treadmill has only a single belt where you can walk/run and the TreadClimber has 2 individual belts.
Mechanism 1 Treadmill action
Both belts in the TreadClimber move forward like how it is on a treadmill.
Mechanism 2 Stair Climber action
These 2 treadles move up and down which makes this perform like a stair climber.
Mechanism 3 Elliptical Trainer action
Both the previous mechanisms combine to give you a feel of an elliptical trainer. This is a low impact exercise which is smooth and helps burn calories.
While the popular adage with the TreadClimber is that it burns 3.5x the number of calories than other standard cardio machines, we think that this might be simplifying it a bit too much. But still, we find that it is more effective than these other cardio machines.
TreadClimbers Reviewed and Rated
When it comes to TreadClimbers, BowFlex have pioneered the entire genre and has become synonymous with this piece of fitness equipment. There are good reasons for this equipment’s penetration of the global market one of the prime factors being its effectiveness at reducing inches and weight. Another important aspect is that it is one of the lowest impact exercise equipment that is also equally effective.
BowFlex have has several models out on sale, but have phased out quite a few with only 2 available in the market currently – the TC100 and TC200 models. They’ve also introduced a new type of TreadClimber that is a lot more compact and equally effective as the original models. They are called Max Trainers and these offer the same benefits as on the TreadClimbers. They have 3 variations – M3, M5 and M7. We’ll take a look at all these different models right here.
BowFlex TreadClimber TC100
The BowFlex TC100 is the calorie burning, starting model of the TreadClimbers from BowFlex. The fact that this is the entry level model does not make this any less effective than the rest of the TreadClimbers in the lineup.
It has 2 smaller treadles instead of a treadmill’s single large tread and it is set of smaller paddles that move up and down simulating the effect of a stair stepper. It has powerful motors which can reach a speed of up to 4 mph which is ideal for walking. It has an interactive, fully backlit console which is LCD based. This is a marked improvement over the TC10 range of TreadClimbers. This multi-display LCD can track several attributes like speed, distance, time taken, and calories burned.
Heart rate is monitored through contact grip sensors that are placed on fixed handlebars. The more advanced TC200 has a wireless heart rate monitor/sensor. You can have a maximum of 2 user profiles stored on machine to save customizable options. It also has a convenient USB port through which you can charge your device.
Safety and Build
The maximum weight capacity of the TreadClimber is about 300 pounds and it is built solidly. You also have a step at the rear of the machine for safety. It is built well with enough space for a lot of things people use like cup holders and non-powered phone dock. The LCD unit offers a lot of customizable options that was not found in earlier models. Even though it replaces 3 machines at your home, it isn’t bulky to say the least.
BowFlex have a 2-year warranty on this machine which is okay but not great. When you’re talking about fitness equipment that are priced in this range, you usually factor is at least a 5-year warranty or sometimes even lifetime.
This is a great entry-level machine into the world of superior home fitness equipment. You will find that this machine offers a significantly greater experience than opting for a treadmill, stair master or an elliptical trainer. Plus, when you look at the fact that it offers several fitness equipment in one, the retail price does seem like a decent bargain.
- Unique and functional design
- Reasonably compact
- Customizable to a certain level
- Has a digital console
- High price, but replaces 3 other machines
- Limited warranty
- Limited number of programs
BowFlex TreadClimber TC200
The more advanced version of the BowFlex TreadClimber is the TC200 version. It has mostly the same mechanicals the upgrades being carried out on the software front in ways of a more detailed LCD console as well as a number of new programs included.
The TC200 has the same small treadles with individual tracks like found in the earlier model. It is purported to burn 2.5x more calories than a standard treadmill. It has several USB ports for charging your devices.
This model comes with a contact grip sensor to record heartrate. It also has a wireless heartrate monitor which also syncs wirelessly to your device through your Bluetooth. They can also sync with their own app called TreadClimber and also several other apps that are available on the market. It has even more user profiles than the earlier model. It has an increased number of programs that are available making it even more customizable.
Safety and Build
This model is built solid and can take a pounding when it comes to fitness workouts from heavy users also. It has a weight capacity of 300 pounds which is possible because of powerful motors present in the machine. It also comes with a phone dock on which you can charge your phone and keep it safe while you exercise.
The warranty period has been bumped to 3 years in this model – we still think it should be a lot more – lifetime warranty would be a great selling point.
While this is a significant improvement over its last model, the TC100, the ethos remains the same. You get a thoroughly effective cardio workout out of it with different approaches forcing your body to work that much harder. If the price is a bit too much to stretch for, you would do well to get the earlier model, the TC100.
- Unique and functional design
- Reasonably compact
- Highly customizable
- Detailed digital console with several attributes
- Several fitness programs
- Slightly expensive, discounts can help
- Limited warranty
Treadclimber Versus The Rest
TreadClimber Vs. Treadmill
While a TreadClimber is a lot more expensive than a treadmill it offers significantly more benefits. Comparing the treadmill directly to the TreadClimber, a study at Adelphi University found that a person of average weight burned more than twice the number of calories – 348 calories vs 135 calories for 30 mins. Tests were taken at 3 mph on both machines.
Another key to TreadClimbers burning more calories than treadmills is the fact that you also have the climbing action from the stair stepper included which means a better workout than just walking. Climbing can reduce occurrence of back pain and also decreased the chance of heart diseases. The TreadClimber also has a much smaller footprint when compared to the treadmill which makes it easier to maneuver around the house.
TreadClimber Vs. Stair Stepper
While a stair stepper gives you a more intense cardiovascular exercise movement, it also puts that much strain on your joints, most importantly, your knees. The TreadClimber offers you a much easier movement pattern that doesn’t put as much strain on your joints. Also, you can go at a much easier pace on the TreadClimber than you would with a stair stepper.
TreadClimber Vs. Elliptical Trainer
While the elliptical trainer is the go to fitness machine for anyone looking for low impact cardio vascular exercise, it is comfortably outdone by the TreadClimber, which in addition to replicating its movement, also improves on it. This results in a movement that is much more conducive to better workouts and building muscle.
While you only place your feet on the platforms on the elliptical machine, here you have to move your feet in tandem with the belts on the treadles. One thing to note that you can have a maximum speed of only about 4.5 miles when you’re using the TreadClimber. The top speed is higher on the elliptical. That said, you will burn more calories when you’re on the TreadClimber even though it is a lot slower.
How to Lose Weight With Cardio
If you want to lose unwanted flab, the best method would be to pursue a combination of cardio exercises and a calorie deficit diet. Cardio machines have become really popular in the last decade due to the pressures of modern life and how it does not allow enough time for pursuing outdoor activities.
There are different types of cardio machines out there like treadmills, stair climbers, treadwalls, ellipticals, and rowing machines to name a few. These machines work and burn different amounts of calories.
Cardio is found to be one of the best burners of excess fat for beginners who are not used to heavy weightlifting. While you might have to spend more time at the cardio machine, you will begin to see good results in time.
This however must be accompanied by a proper diet if you want to see improvements. Make sure that you eat a lot of veggies and skinless chicken, especially the breast portion because they have very little fat.
If you are looking for a quick and healthy method to lose weight, then these fitness machines won’t let you down. All these models can give you a significant advantage if you’re upgrading from your treadmill, stair stepper, elliptical or other run of the mill cardio equipment. Another important factor is that these are low to no impact which make them ideal for use by people of all ages. Even people who are recovering from injuries and want to get fit can give this a shot.
While these might be out of reach for people when it comes to price, you need to remember that this replaces 3 other pieces of equipment. When you put benefits down in comparison with the price point of the equipment it replaces, it makes a whole lot of sense to invest in one of these. What you can look forward to when you buy these machines is the fact that you will lose weight and inches much more quickly rather than if you were on other cardio equipment.
